Suggestions for the use of golden paste.

There appears to be a lot of confusion about how to include golden paste in the diet. We’re often asked if it’s allowed to add golden paste to this food or that one. Someone may say that they’d like to try it but they don’t drink milk, or whatever other method they've heard is the only permissible way to consume turmeric.

Golden paste is a combination of spices that can be added to any desired food. It’s a food itself, and there are no restrictions on which foods it may be combined with. We strongly suggest not adding it to sugared foods, but that’s because we strongly suggest not consuming sugared foods, not because the sugar will somehow make the golden paste less effective. It will just provide more inflammation for the turmeric in the golden paste to deal with.

Here are some ways that members of the Facebook Turmeric User Group use golden paste in their regular diets. In each case, if this is an individual portion, use the amount that you are having at the current time. If you’re preparing a dish for a family, use the total of the individual portions. Don’t cook the golden paste into the recipe, unless this is something that’s just being warmed up. Mix in the golden paste after the dish is prepared and ready to serve.

Obviously there is going to be a lot of individual variation in what people like. You may turn up your nose at having golden paste in one food and find it very appealing in another one. Experiment and see where you prefer it.

Beverages
  • Coffee
  • Cocoa
  • Tea
  • Masala chai
  • Fruit or vegetable smoothies
  • Golden milk made with dairy or non-dairy milk
  • Vegetable juices such as tomato juice and V-8
  • Vegetable and meat broths or bouillon
Breakfast
  • Porridge (oatmeal)
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Breakfast burritos with meat, cheese and/or eggs
Main Meals
  • Most soups (probably not appropriate in cream-based or very delicately-flavored soups)
  • Most stews, especially those that have a significant amount of tomato
  • Many pasta or rice casseroles, especially those with tomato in them
  • Savoury side dishes such as egg salad and potato salad
  • As a condiment on sandwiches (really good with cheese and pickle)
  • With dal (pulses and legumes) or any other Indian dish that would have turmeric in it anyway
  • As a rub for grilled or roasted meats, though that will subject the golden paste to excessively high heat in most cases. If you want to use it for that, it’s better to add it after the meat comes off the grill or out of the oven
Appetizers and treats
  • Hummous – golden paste is a great addition to hummous, whether you purchase it or make it yourself
  • Cottage cheese or yoghurt (but please avoid the flavored sweetened concoctions that are marketed as yoghurt.
  • Add to soft cheese as a topping for crackers
  • Mix lightly with assorted nuts—many people particularly like it with cashews
